proposal.
In 1883, W. Lister,
having been appointed
Colonial Treasurer in
addition to being
Postmaster General, suggested that a portion of the quarters occupied by him should be turned into offices for
the Treasury staff, he being exempted from
paying rent for
the remainder.
This was considered by the
Governor in Executive
Council, and Sir George
London Bowen was of opinion that
the request was reasonable. Since then Mr Lister was
permitted to use, without the payment of any rent,
the two rooms mentioned
in the particulars of office
transmitted in
my despatch No. 250 of the 23rd of July.
